Usually, Margaret Island in central Budapest is the peaceful hiding place for many who want to take a break from the busy downtown Budapest, but next year from April 21 to April 26, 2016, people going for a leisurely walk will most likely be able to hear cheering and applauding crowds when hundreds of athletes will occupy the island during the ISF WSC Cross-Country 2016. Actually, the area that will make up the scene for this upcoming championship is traditionally the venue of Budapest Half Marathons, so the organisers from the Hungarian School Sport Federation have surely done a great job finding a setting with just the right atmosphere for the participants. So far, 68 teams have signed up from 23 different countries.
During the championship, all delegations will be accommodated at Danubius Hotel Budapest located rather close to the island. However, the team hotel will not only house the athletes, as it will also host the International Friendship Evening, a returning socio-cultural event during every world schools championship that seeks to bring athletes closer across borders.
Following the day of competition in the large green areas at Margaret Island, athletes will have a change of sight as they are invited to take part in an excursion to see some of the hidden treasures of the Hungarian capital, and what they have not had the chance to discover during this day, they will most likely be able to see from the Citadel fortress, which will provide the scene for the friendship relay taking place one of the last days of the championship. From the fortress, located on top of Gellert Hill, it is possible to have a beautiful view of Budapest, the Danube River, the Parliament, the Buda Hill and much more, which made UNESCO inscribe Gellert Hill to its World Heritage List in 1987.
Taking all things into account, such as the venue, the sights and the activities that have been put in place for this upcoming championship, the Hungarian organisers have without doubt prepared a setting that offers participants not only a memorable sporting experience, but also the chance to be enchanted by the charm and stunning scenery of Budapest.
