Last week 185 young table tennis players gathered in Gzira, Malta, not only to compete, but to engage in all activities Education through Sport supports, at the 2018 ISF World School Championship (WSC).
The championship saw 49 teams, consisting of youth athletes aged 16-18, from 20 countries and three continents, competing in 144 matches over the course of one week (April 8-14).
The 2018 WSC in table tennis was organised by the Malta School Sport Federation and Malta Table Tennis Association.
Young players, boys and girls, first competed in the team format which consisted of two categories; school and selected teams. On Wednesday, the finals closed with an absolutely dominating performance by China. The Gymnasiade 2020 host country won in all four categories and claimed the overall title of the 2018 ISF World School Champions in table tennis.
China was followed by Poland, Turkey, Chinese Taipei, India and Croatia, teams which took over the silver and bronze podium spots.

After a day off (sport) on Thursday, students returned to the tables on Friday for the individual and friendships competition. Once again, youth from Asia proved they are here to claim the titles left; athletes from China and Chinese Taipei occupied all three podium places in the individual categories.
The friendship competition’s trophies went to the athletes from England and Belgium FC.
United Arab Emirates was the team which showed the best of example of sportsmanship and was consequently awarded with the Kinder+Sport #JoyofMoving trophy for fair play.
As usual, ISF events are a lot more than a sole competition. Thursday was spent exploring Gzira and learning about Malta’s culture. Youth athletes finished the day with a Cultural Festival where all 20 participating countries presented their traditions and customs.
At the closing ceremony the ISF flag was passed on to the delegation from China. In two years, table tennis will be one of the sports featured at 2020 Gymnasiade School Summer Games in Jinjiang.
