In 2014, the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, in charge of the policies related to the fields of Education, Training and Youth created a new Sport action in the Eramus + programme since the European Union has the competence to carry out actions to support or supplement the actions of the Member States in the sport field (as stated in the Treaty on the Functioning on the European Union, article 6 and 165).
Erasmus + provides grants for a wide range of actions and activities in the fields of education, training, youth and sport. The programme gives opportunities to students, trainees, staff and volunteers to spend a period abroad to increase their skills and employability. It supports organisations to work in transnational partnership and to share innovative practices in the fields of education, training and youth.
The new Sport action supports grassroots projects and cross-border partnerships to address the following challenges :
- Tackle cross-border threats to the integrity of sport, such as doping, match fixing and violence, as well as all kinds of intolerance and discrimination;
- To promote and support good governance in sport and dual careers of athletes;
- To promote voluntary activities in sport, together with social inclusion, equal opportunities and awareness of the importance of health-enhancing physical activity, through increased participation in, and equal access to sport for all.
