ISF Gymnasiade 2018 – Milestone for African School Sport!
A big premiere awaits for the African school sport – from 2nd to 9th of May 2018, the 17th Gymnasiade, an Olympics for youngsters, will take place in the “red city” of Morocco, Marrakech just few months before the Youth Olympics 2018! This major school sport event organised by International School Sport Federation (ISF), whose main motto is “Education through sport”, will gather young students from all around the world to experience the spirit of international competition, fair play, friendship and cultural diversity.
The young hopes of future sport will have a chance to measure their strengths with students from all around the world in 16 disciplines:
6 clusters across Marrakech will host 14 sports in total. The competitions of swimming and surfing will take place in Casablanca. The event will have a sustainable character with low energy sports venues and legacy which the renewing of some sport venues which will re-activate the school sport activities in certain district of the city.
To organise Gymnasiade in an African country will be a significant milestone for the development of school sport and sport in general not only on African continent, but worldwide. On the 21st of June, ISF, represented by its president Laurent Petrynka and the country of Morocco, represented by Minister of Education Mohamed Hassad together with Minister of Sport and Youth Rachid Talbi Alami, signed the contractual agreement that set the grounds for launching the preparation of the Gymnasiade 2018. Parallel to this event, a delegation of ISF carried out an inspection visit of all the venues and confirmed the presumption of a successful event with quality facilities.

In November 2017, first African School Sport Forum will take place in Marrakech to promote the school sport. Furthermore, the Minister has taken the initiative to support African countries to come and participate to the Gymnasiade, where 4000 participants from more than 60 countries are expected. The event will be supported by the IOC member Nawal El Moutawakel, Moroccan former athlete and Olympic golden medallist.
International School Sport Federation's aspiration is to increase the number of participating countries from Africa and to spread the message of school sport together with ISF's values among all perspective youngsters of this continent.
