ISF World School Handball Championship Belgrade 2021 Comes to a Close!

The 25th edition of the ISF World School Handball Championship which began on 27 November, came to a conclusion this past Saturday 4 December, in Belgrade Serbia. The event saw over 400 participants from 24 teams of boys and girls from 13 different countries participate in 6 days of competition, with Brazil, Bulgaria, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Sweden represented.

Entering that final day of competition, the girl’s final was to be decided between Egypt and Germany, with the boys’ final being between Germany and Denmark. After two hard fought games it was the teams from Germany who took home the victory in both categories. In the 3rd/4th place matches, it was Romania who took home the Bronze against Montenegro in the girls match, and for the boys it was Egypt who finished 3rd, beating the delegation from France. The Kinderjoyofmoving Fair Play Trophy which is an integral part of all ISF sport events was awarded to the Poland boys delegation.

The ceremony was then followed by the traditional ISF Nations Night, an evening dedicated to interaction and sharing between the delegations, allowing for participants a chance to discover other countries and their traditions. As with all ISF events, the sport competition was accompanied by both cultural and educational activities throughout the week. Providing some rest from the intense competition, participants also had the opportunity to explore the city of Belgrade on the 4th day of the event, a day dedicated to non-sport activities.

Each competition day was also accompanied by teambuilding workshops for the participants as well as refereeing seminars. In partnership with the International Handball Federation (IHF), the seminars were implemented thanks to work of IHF Board of Instructors member, Terje Anthonsen who was also overseeing all the officiating of the event. All ISF events aim for equal gender representation of participating teams. It was therefore a tremendous success to have 12 women referees out of the 28 total officials who were participating in this event.

Games also hosted in Belgrade, Serbia, this WSC Handball event followed the template of having a BeTogether ceremony in place of an opening and closing ceremony, positioned in the middle of the event. The ceremony which took place the same day as the cultural excursions, was opened by Serbian School Sport Federation President Zeljko Tanaskovic, who welcomed all the participants to Serbia, a country globally known for the sport of handball. He was joined on stage by ISF Sports Director, Josip Kosutic who thanked President Tanaskovic and his team from the Serbian Local Organising Committee, as well as all the members of the ISF Handball Technical Commission, and its President Constantin Caliman for their hard work in preparing and executing yet another successful ISF event.
