FEASSA 2026 Highlights the Growing Role of Regional School Sport in East Africa
Aug. 21, Morogoro, Tanzania – The 2026 FEASSA Games in Morogoro have highlighted the growing role of regional school sport in East Africa, while creating new opportunities to strengthen the pathway from national and regional competition to the international school sport stage.
The 23rd edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSA) Games brought together more than 5,000 student-athletes across Primary, Secondary and Special Needs Education categories. With 413 teams taking part, the Morogoro edition became the largest in the history of the regional Games and further expanded the scope of school sport participation across East Africa.
Representing Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, FEASSA provides an important regional platform through which schools, national school sport associations and education authorities can exchange experience and develop young athletes. The 2026 Games also reinforced the connection between regional and international school sport, with FEASSA winners gaining opportunities to progress to international competitions, including ISF events.
Alongside the sporting programme, the FEASSA Symposium brought education and school sport leaders from across the five member countries together to discuss “Sports Talent Development Pathways: From School Sport to Regional and Global Excellence.” Discussions addressed talent identification and development, athlete welfare, sports science, inclusion, school sport policy and the need for stronger coordination between national systems.
The 2026 Symposium also looked towards the next stage of this development, including stronger links between FEASSA, national school sport structures and international competitions, as well as greater ambitions for East Africa to host international school sport events. FEASSA has identified opportunities to pursue hosting of various categories of ISF events, further connecting regional development with the global school sport movement.
As FEASSA continues to expand its regional platform, ISF looks forward to strengthening cooperation with the organisation and its member countries, supporting a more connected pathway through which young athletes can progress from school sport to regional competition and, ultimately, the international stage.
